Past experiences of how someone else has practiced their faith can color our own thinking about God. If you find yourself drawn to God but repelled by the idea of religion, consider praying a prayer something like this:
God, I don’t know if you exist. I’d like to believe in you but I don’t want to be one of “those” people. I’m not ready for a long list of rules and I don’t want to change my life. If there is a way to believe in you and still be me, reveal yourself to me.
It says very clearly in the Bible that those who seek God will find him. Ask God to reveal himself to you. Be honest about your reservations. God is not offended by questions or doubts.
If you prayed this prayer we’d love to hear from you. You can send us an email and one of our email mentors will respond. There is no cost, no obligation. You can continue the conversation if you want to or simply delete the email if you don’t.
Another place to talk about questions of faith is in the chatroom. If you’re looking for a place to start searching, attend one of the moderated sessions. You can see a full calendar of upcoming chats by scrolling down on the chat log-in page. Moderated sessions are hosted to keep the chats on topic and make sure all participants are respectful of each other’s opinions and questions.
